General description of the school

The école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen was founded in 1795 following the creation of the Ecoles Centrales. Over the years, the structure of this school has evolved to become what is now a higher education institution in plastic arts.

The school is a service of the Communauté d’agglomération de Caen la mer (Caen la Mer administrative area), and placed under the educational supervision of the French Ministry of culture and communication

An architectural project is currently in the design stages with a view to creating a new building to house all of the school’s workshop – at present spread over four sites.

The Communauté d’agglomération de Caen la mer provides 82,71% of the department’s budget expenses. The Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (Regional Department of Cultural Affairs), under the French Ministry for culture and communication, subsidises up to 10,80% of the school’s activities, and the Conseil général du Calvados (Calvados County Council) up to 1,99%. 5,04% comes from income earned by the institution’s activities.
